Statistical Multiplexing of Self-Similar Traffic Sources: Theoretical and Simulation Results

A. Patel and  C. L. Williamson. TeleSim technical report, May 1997.

Abstract: This paper studies the effective bandwidth required when multiple self-similar (i.e., long range dependent) traffic sources are statistically multiplexed together in a network. In particular, a theoretical effective bandwidth formula developed by Ilkka Norros [17] is used as the basis for deriving additional theoretical results for self-similar traffic. An ATM network simulator is then used to assess the accuracy of the theoretical results. In general, the simulation results show good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the effective bandwidths predicted by the formula.
